Her Majesty The Queen has awarded the George Cross to the NHS as the health service marks its 73rd anniversary.

It’s only the third time the honour has been given to a collective body, country or organisation, rather than an individual.

In a handwritten message announcing the award, The Queen wrote: “This award recognises all NHS staff, past and present, across all disciplines and all four nations. Collectively, over more than seven decades, they have supported the people of our country with courage, compassion and dedication, demonstrating the highest standards of public service.”

Following the announcement, NHS England Chief Executive Sir Simon Stevens said the award recognised the “skill, compassion and fortitude” of NHS workers.

HCSA Chairman Mark Roscrow MBE said: “This unprecedented honour is the perfect tribute to NHS workers throughout the country, including HCSA members and procurement professionals, who have tackled the extraordinary challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with commitment and courage.”

HCSA President Lord Philip Hunt added: “The awarding of the George Cross is a historical achievement for each and every NHS worker including the procurement staff I have come to know so well. I can think of no better way to mark the tireless work of the NHS in tackling the pandemic and the roll out of the vaccine programme that has provided the light at the end of the tunnel.”
