This year’s recipients of the annual HCSA Awards were announced at a Gala Dinner at the Hilton Manchester, Deansgate on Wednesday night (23 November).

The Lord Mayor of Manchester was in attendance alongside more than 500 assembled guests as the awards were handed out.

The HCSA Chairman’s Award went to Chris Slater MBE, ICS Provider Procurement Director

West Yorkshire & Harrogate.

Chris came to the NHS when he joined Leeds Teaching Hospitals as Head of Procurement in 2004, where he quickly began modernising the department, bringing in an inventory management system and creating systems to analyse data and purchasing trends. Leeds went on to became one of the original six scan4safety demonstrator sites as he worked with clinical and operational colleagues to embed scan4safety across the Trust.

Chris was also instrumental in setting up and supporting collaborative working across West Yorkshire and over the past six years has led the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) collaboration and West Yorkshire ICS collaboration.

During the COVID pandemic, Chris was asked to support the set up of the Harrogate Nightingale hospital, creating a full supply chain solution for the 500 bed unit in less than four weeks. During this period, he also supported Leeds, West Yorkshire and Yorkshire & North east in procuring PPE and supporting mutual aid across the patch. Chris was subsequently awarded an MBE this year and retired in April.

The HCSA Awards 2022 also saw the first presentation of the Lord Philip Hunt Award - created in honour of our longest-serving President – which was given to the top delegate from this year’s HCSA PDP event - Rebekah Bradshaw from Collaborative Procurement Partnership. In addition, Katie Woods from Lancashire Procurement Cluster and Diane Andrew, from North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative, were ‘highly commended’.

Congratulations to everyone who received an award this year and many thanks to all who put forth nominations in what was another very difficult year for the judges due to the calibre of submissions.
