Covid has caused huge disruption across many sectors from travel to the courts and, of course, healthcare both here and around the world, writes Sir Jim Mackey.
There were predictions that the impact of the pandemic would lead to NHS waiting lists climbing to ten million by Christmas 2020.
Since then, we have endured further waves of Covid infections and hospitalisations as well as huge pressure on other services. Thanks to the hard work of staff we are still a long way off that prediction.
Nobody in the health service wants patients to wait a minute more than necessary for treatment, which is why we are delighted to announce today that we have reached the first milestone on the NHS elective recovery plan.
